"Jim Crow's Tears" is a jazz oratorio composed by Kris Johnson and influenced by the history of minstrelsy and blackface entertainment in the United States. This educational presentation combines musical, theatrical, and visual arts to tell the story of a young slave who was forced to become a minstrel performer. The Ellen Rowe Quartet returns to KCH to premiere several new pieces in addition to performing material from their CD "Denali Pass" and as well as Ellen’s "Sylvan Way.” Joining pianist Ellen Rowe are saxophonist Andrew Bishop, bassist Kurt Krahnke and drummer Pete Siers.
Ellen Rowe has been described as "that rare 'triple threat' of pianist, composer-arranger and teacher". Her debut trio CD "Sylvan Way" combines jazz standards with original compositions that "soar with emotion and expression". She has been showcased twice on "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz" on NPR, most recently in the spring of 2003. The Quartet's performance at the San Jose Jazz Festival was recently broadcast on "Jazz Set" with Dee Dee Bridgewater and their new CD, "Denali Pass" was released in January 2005. The quartet has been invited to perform at the 2005 International Association for Jazz Education Conference in Long Beach, CA. Ellen is an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Michigan.
