E Dog Benefit for Detroit Sax Man PDF Print E-mail
Written by JazzStage Productions
Friday, 13 June 2008
Although he was born in Cleveland and has lived in the San Francisco area for the past 12 years, Scott Petersen, (“E Dog” to everyone he knows) has always considered Detroit his musical home.  This hardworking saxophone player is known and loved from coast to coast having played with many Detroit acts and renowned names such as Aretha Franklin and Dizzy Gillespie.  One of the world’s longest surviving adults with cystic fibrosis, he is now awaiting a double lung transplant.

Detroit’s finest jazz and R ‘n’ B musicians will be on hand at Cliff Bell’s on Tuesday, June 17 to raise badly needed funds for this deserving and talented sax man.  Scheduled to perform are Marcus Belgrave, Thornetta Davis, Johnnie Bassett, Paul Keller, Walt Szymanski, RJ Spangler & James O'Donnell and the Planet D Nonet, Bill Heid and also the Sun Messengers.  The music begins at 8 p.m.  There is a suggested donation of $10; all proceeds will go toward Scott’s transplant and follow-up care.

In 1956, doctors told Scott’s parents he had cystic fibrosis – an inherited disorder of the respiratory and digestive tracts – and that he would only live to be 5.  He proved them wrong. Today, because of better treatment options, people with cystic fibrosis are now living into their 30s, 40s and beyond.  Peterson is now on a waiting list at the University of California at San Francisco Medical Center.  He cannot travel because the surgery could be anytime, but the love and concern of his fellow musicians touches him deeply: He says, “It’s overwhelming.  Sometimes it just chokes me up.  It’s an amazing thing.  It makes me feel like the luckiest guy in the world.”

Scott turns 52 on June 16, and he believes being a woodwind player has helped him survive and thrive: “I still have 80 percent of my lung capacity and I know how to use it,” he says, adding that he goes through two hours of lung treatments before every gig. “I have to work my tail off, and it’s tricky.  But I’ve been able to keep working…”

Donations are also being accepted in care of the "Scott Petersen Transplant Fund.” Checks can be mailed to: Scott Petersen Transplant Fund, P.O. Box 1010, Novato, CA.   94948.1010.
