Twenty musicians will go head to head at The Battle of the Bands VI, Detroit’s sixth swing band competition since World War II on March 6, 2010.
The Dave Bennett Quartet (DBQ) will defend its _title_ against Paul King & the Rhythm Society Orchestra (PK&RSO). The dance will be held in the Masonic Temple’s Crystal Ballroom, which boasts a 5,000 square-foot wooden floor.
Dave Bennett is an authentic musical prodigy. At age 17 Bennett was selected as one of two high school students from a field of 600, to have the opportunity to perform as a Special Guest Soloist with The Count Basie Orchestra. Windsor Star music writer Ted Shaw called him, "a jaw dropping phenomenon on the clarinet."
Sixteen-piece PK&RSO from Detroit specializes in swing from the mid-1930s through late 1940s. Its sound is influenced by Count Basie and Harry James and has covered the top swing venues throughout the Midwest. The band has been nominated for Detroit Music Awards including Best Big Band/Swing artists, Outstanding Jazz Vocalist and Outstanding Jazz Instrumentalists.
Dancers of all skill levels are welcome. Many come just to enjoy the sights and sounds. Dress is semi-formal or vintage attire.
The doors open at 7 p.m., with a dance lesson from 7-8 p.m. The Battle begins at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $22 per person in advance or at the door. Guests may take the beginning swing lesson for an additional $5. Tables of eight may be reserved in advance.
The Battle of the Bands is part of the BIG3 (Big Band, Big Floor, Big Crowd) swing dance series. This is the 23rd BIG3 since October 2000, when the event began drawing Michigan’s best swing dancers and music fans. It quickly grew in popularity and now draws regularly from as many as 15 states and provinces.
